Medical-Surgical
Internship
The Medical-Surgical Internship
program is designed to provide the nursing intern with the
opportunity to apply and practice basic to advanced medical-surgical
concepts and skills. The intern will receive selected didactic and
skill demonstrations specific to the medical-surgical population.
This internship is applicable
for new LPN and RN graduates who are entering the acute care setting
for the first time, or for nurses who have not been active in the
acute care setting.
Length of the internship
contract: 24 months.

Progressive Care Internship
The Progressive Care Internship
program examines many of the more complex concepts related to
nursing on a progressive care unit. Some of the topics discussed
are: cardiac and respiratory assessment, identification of ECG
rhythms, cardiac medications, acid-base balance, care of the
neurological patient, and the renal-impaired patient.
This internship is designed for
both the new graduate and the experienced medical-surgical nurse
desiring to advance to a progressive care environment.
Program Prerequisites:
successful completion of the Medical-Surgical program.
Length of internship contract: 24 months.

Intensive Care Internship
The American Associate of
Critical Care Nursing (AACN) web-based Core Curriculum provides the
didactic component for this program. The focus of this program is on
hemodynamic monitoring, oxygen delivery and transport, mechanical
ventilation, vasoactive and inotropic drugs, shock, and many other
concepts related to the care of the critically ill patient. In
addition to the web-based programs, supplemental classroom
experiences utilizing case studies, critical thinking vignettes will
be provided throughout a 16-week period.
Program Prerequisites:
New graduates or nurses who have not been in the acute care setting
will need to successfully complete the Medical-Surgical, and
Progressive Care Programs.
Length of internship contract: 24 months.

Emergency Department
Internship
The Emergency Department
Internship program is a six-month program addressing the specific
needs related to emergency nursing. Based on the Standards of the
American Association of Emergency Nursing, this program is designed
for new graduate nurses.
Program Prerequisites:
Each intern candidate will be assessed for individual learning needs
and any additional prerequisite course that is necessary will be
recommended.
Length of internship contract: 24 months.

Maternal-Child Internship
The Maternal-Child Internship
program is designed for both the new graduate nurse and the
experienced medical-surgical nurse who desires to work in the
maternal-child environment. Based on the standards of the National
Association of AWHONN, this program is a twelve-week program
consisting of classroom and precepted experience with a clinical
coach based on the intern's individualized needs.
Program Prerequisites:
Each intern candidate will be assessed for individual learning needs
and any additional prerequisite course that is necessary will be
recommended.
Length of internship contract: 24 months.

Neonatal Intensive Care
Internship Program
The Neonatal Intensive Care
Internship program is designed for both the new graduate and the
experienced nurse desiring to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit. Based on national standards of NICU nursing, this program
focuses on neonatal assessment, physiology, ventilator management,
thermoregulation, medication, and brain and spinal cord development.
This program consists of an initial phase of a 12-week classroom and
clinical experience. After this initial 12 weeks of the internship,
a precepted experience with a clinical coach is provided based on
the intern's individualized needs. Approximate completion time is
about 8 months.
Program Prerequisites:
Each intern candidate will be assessed for individual learning needs
and any additional prerequisite course that is necessary will be
recommended.

Pediatric Internship Program
The Pediatric Internship
program is designed for both the new graduate and the experienced
nurse who would like to work in the pediatric environment. Based on
national pediatric standards, the focus of this program is on the
assessment and nursing management of the pediatric patient and
family. Initially, the program consists of a 8 week series of
didactic instruction, as well as skills labs to prepare interns for
work in the pediatric, pediatric intensive care, and pediatric
oncology areas, in order to provide the opportunity to see an entire
continuum of pediatric care. After this initial 8 weeks of the
internship, a precepted experience with a clinical coach is provided
based on the intern's individualized needs.

and any additional prerequisite course that is necessary will be
recommended.

Perioperative Internship Program *Now includes high-risk
The Perioperative Internship
Program is a one-year program that is designed for new graduates as
well as the experienced nurse. This program, based on the standards
of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, focuses on the role of
the nurse in the Operating Room environment. The program is an
extensive integration of classroom and clinical experiences,
individualized to the intern's needs, from six to twelve months.

and any additional prerequisite course that is necessary will be
recommended.

Oncology/Hematology Internship Program
The Oncology Internship program
is a program designed to provide a firm clinical foundation for new
graduates, as well as for the experienced nurses in developing
competency in assessment and nursing management of adult oncology
patients in the acute care setting. This program, based on the
standards of the Oncology Nurses Association, consists of an initial
phase of ten weeks of classroom and clinical orientation. After this
initial phase of the internship, a precepted experience with
clinical coach is provided for approximately 8 to 12 weeks, based on
the intern's individual needs.
Program Prerequisites:
For the new graduates or experienced nurses new to the acute care
setting, successful completion of the Medical-Surgical Program is
required.

Neuroscience Nursing Internship Program
The Neuroscience Nursing
Internship program prepares both the new graduate and the
experienced nurse to develop a basic foundation in the skills of
neuroscience nursing. The patient population served by neurosurgical
care has experienced dysfunction of the nervous system. The nurse
must apply principles of medical-surgical nursing, neuroanatomy,
neuropathophysiology, and rehabilitation. The program is a
combination of classroom and individualized clinical preceptorship
on the unit with a clinical coach.
Program Prerequisites:
For new graduates or experienced nurses new to acute care setting,
successful completion of the Medical-Surgical program is required.
Length of internship contract: 24 months.
