July Tips of the Month: Safety Tips
While You're in the Heat
-
Dress accordingly. Cool, light colors
reflect the sun. Lightweight, loose fitting clothes tend not
to trap the heat by the body.
-
Wear a hat or carry an umbrella.
-
Plan activities either in the early
morning or late afternoon when the temperature has dropped
somewhat.
-
Rest frequently.
-
Fluids, Fluids, Fluids. Carry plenty of
water or sports drinks with you and drink them frequently.
Do not wait until you are thirsty.
-
Do not drink Alcohol or Caffeine before,
during, or after being in the heat. Both of these affect
your body's ability to regulate heat.
-
Eat smaller meals. Avoid heavy, starchy
foods that tend to weigh you down and make you sluggish and
foods high in protein which increases metabolic heat. Hot
foods add heat to your body.
-
Do not use salt tablets. Salt tablets will
actually slow down the absorption of water and can make
dehydration worse.
-
Be careful of hot cars. Allow the car to
cool off before getting in.
