May Tips of the Month: Bicycle Safety
Bicycles are associated with more childhood
injuries than any other consumer product except automobiles.
Universal bicycle helmet use by children ages 4 to 15 would
prevent 39,000 to 45,000 head injuries and 18,000 to 55,000
scalp and facial injuries each year.
The state of Florida
requires anyone under the age of 16 to wear a helmet when riding
a bike. Wearing a helmet is the best thing you can do to be safe
when you ride a bike. Bicycle helmets save lives. Most bike
deaths come from head injury. Bike helmets can prevent head
injury. Bicycle helmets can reduce head injuries by 85 percent.
As a parent, be a good role model and always wear a helmet when
you ride.
