May Tips of the Month: Four Steps for
Child Passenger Safety
-
Rear-facing infant
seats in the back seat from birth to one year old and at
least 20 pounds. If the seat can be rear facing to a higher weight limit, continue
rear facing for as long as possible.
-
Forward-facing toddler
seats in the back seat from age one to about age four and
20-40 pounds.
-
Booster seats in the
back seat from about age four and to at least age eight and
4'9" tall.
-
Never place a child
passenger safety seat in front of an air bag.
Seat belts were designed
for adults. Children should not be in a seat belt until they are
4'9" tall. Their back should fit against the back of the seat
and their knees should bend at the end of the seat with their
feet touching the floor. Until they are able to do this, they
should be in a booster seat with allows the safety belt to fit
them properly.
