October Tips of the Month: National Traumatic Brain Injury Month

October is national Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Traumatic brain injury is an insult to the brain, caused by an external physical force, that may produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in an impairment of cognitive abilities (thinking, reasoning, remembering, imagining, mood, or learning words), or physical function (strength, coordination, and balance). It can also result in the disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning. These impairments may be either temporary or permanent and can cause a partial or total functional disability or psychosocial maladjustment.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), each year in the United States, 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury. Of those 275,000 are hospitalized and 1.365 million, nearly 80%, are treated and released from an emergency department.. Fifty-two thousand people die from a traumatic brain injury which accounts for one-third of all injury deaths.  124,626 people experience the onset of long-term or lifelong disability associated with a traumatic brain injury.

For children ages 0-14 years, traumatic brain injury results in an estimated 2,174 deaths, 35,136 hospitalizations, and 473,947 emergency department visits.

For older adults ages greater then 65 years, traumatic brain injury results in and estimated 141,998 emergency department visits, 81,499 hospitalizations, and 14,347 deaths.
