-
Install smoke detectors on every level of
your house and outside sleeping areas.
-
Keep smoke detectors dust free --
regularly vacuum over and around the detector.
-
Replace batteries at least yearly and
whenever it starts to make a chirping noise.
-
Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen,
garage and workshop.
-
Learn how to properly use the
extinguisher.
-
Extinguishers are for small fires only. If
there is a large fire, get out immediately and call 911 from
another location.
-
Plan two escape routes from each room and
practice them with the entire family. Designate an area
where everyone will meet once they are away from the fire.
-
If you must escape through smoke crawl low
under the smoke to your exit.
-
Practice STOP, DROP AND ROLL with your
children. If your clothes catch on fire, stop where you are,
drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands and and
roll over and over to smother the flames.
-
Pots on stovetops should always have their
handles turned toward the center of the stove where children
cannot reach up and pull them off.
-
Keep matches, lighters, and candles out of
the reach of children.
-
Never smoke in bed.
-
Don't smoke when you are drinking or
abnormally tired.
-
Never dump an ashtray into the trash
without wetting the butts and ashes first.
