September Tips of the Month: Baby Cribs

Are the slats less than 2 ⅜ inches and secure? The corner posts should never be any higher than the end panels. Make sure the mattress fits correctly in the crib and has no holes in it. Stuffed animals should be removed. There should be nothing in the crib but the baby - no heavy blankets, comforters, or large stuffed animals, since these items may obstruct the baby's airway.  Make sure the crib is not near any windows, electrical outlets, lamps, etc. Mobiles over the crib should be removed once the baby is able to pull him/herself up.

Check to make sure the baby's pacifier is in good condition. Be sure it isn't pulling apart. Never use string to attach the pacifier to baby's clothes or crib.

Is the sleepwear fire retardant? Check labels to be sure. Do not use liquid fabric softeners as this will decrease the effectiveness of flame retardant in the clothing.
