September Tips of the Month: Childproofing Your Home
  • Install child-resistant covers on all electrical outlets.

  • Keep dangerous chemicals out of children's reach.

  • Shorten curtain and blind cords.

  • Use corner bumpers on furniture.

  • Place houseplants out of children's reach.

  • Know the names of plants in case a child eats one of them.

  • Keep the Poison Control number on each telephone: 1-800-222-1222.

  • Keep cigarettes, matches, and lighters out of children's reach.

  • Install carbon monoxide alarms outside bedrooms to help prevent poisoning.

  • Install smoke alarms outside each bedroom and on every level of your home.

  • Keep firearms and ammunition safely locked away.

  • Secure unsteady furniture.

  • Be vigilant about choking hazards.

  • Learn first aid and CPR.

  • Put a lock on the medicine cabinet.

  • To prevent poisoning, lock away all vitamins and medicines.

  • Keep knives, cleaning supplies and plastic bags out of children's reach.

  • Use back burners on stove with handles turned to the back of stove whenever possible.

  • Never leave a child unattended in the kitchen when you are cooking.

  • Store tools, garden and lawn-care equipment and supplies in a locked shed.

  • If you have a swimming pool, enclose it completely with a barrier. Fences should be at least 4 feet high and have a self-latching, self-closing gate. Also consider using door and pool alarms and pool safety covers.

  • Remove doors from old, unused appliances such as refrigerators and freezers. Lock any out of the way freezers, coolers and trunks securely.
