September Tips of the Month: Reducing
the Risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
-
Place infants on their back to
sleep. Infants who sleep on their stomach and sides
have a higher rate of SIDS than those who sleep on their
back.
-
Place your infant only on a firm mattress
in a safe crib; never on an adult bed, couch, chair or
anywhere else.
-
There should be nothing in the crib but
the baby. No heavy blankets, bed spreads, quilts, comforters
or large stuffed animals. These items could obstruct the
baby's breathing.
-
Never allow your baby to sleep alongside
another person be it child or adult. The risk of smothering
by the other person is too great.
-
Do not over-clothe the infant while he/she
sleeps. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable
for you. Overheating and infant can increase the risk of
SIDS.
-
Don't have your infant in the same house
with someone who smokes. The greater the exposure to
tobacco smoke, the greater the risk of SIDS.
