The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations,
also known as The Joint Commission (TJC)
is an independent, non-profit organization, established in 1951,
that evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 health
care organizations and programs in the United States.
2006 National Patient Safety Goals focus on a variety of safety challenges that most hospitals face on
a daily basis. Each year The Joint Commission publishes a set of National Patient
Safety Goals (NPSGs) designed to encourage hospitals to make
improvements in the way they care for patients, to reduce
preventable medical errors, and to improve patient safety.
Quality Check
is a web-based "quality tool" posted on The Joint Commission web site at: www.qualitycheck.org, as a comprehensive guide to the more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs
throughout the United States that are accredited by The Joint
Commission. It features a user-friendly format
with checks, pluses and minuses to help the general public compare
health care organization performance in a number of key areas.
National Hospital Quality Alliance is a a public-private
collaboration that was set up to improve the quality of care
provided by the nation's hospitals by measuring and publicly
reporting on that care. This collaboration includes the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the American Hospital
Association, the Federation of American Hospitals, and the
Association of American Medical Colleges, and is supported by other
organizations such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality, the National Quality Forum, The Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC), American Medical
Association, American Nurses Association, National Association of
Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, Consumer-Purchaser
Disclosure Project, AFL-CIO, AARP, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The
goal of the
National Hospital Quality Alliance is to identify a set of standardized and easy-to-understand hospital quality measures
that would be used by all stakeholders in the healthcare system in
order to improve quality of care and the ability of consumers to
make informed healthcare choices.
