Beginning in 2003, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (TJC)
established the National Patient
Safety Goals (NPSGs). The purpose of these Safety Goals is to
promote specific improvements in patient safety.
The National Patient Safety Goals highlight problematic areas in
healthcare, using both evidence and expert based data, which are updated
annually. These Goals are designed to require health care organizations
to protect patients from the negative impact of specific health care
errors.
The 2006 Goals include requiring hospitals to:
- Identify Patients Correctly
- Improve Effective Communication
- Improve the Safety of Using Medications
- Reduce the Risk of Healthcare-Associated Infections
- Accurately and Completely Reconcile Medications Across the
Continuum of Care
- Reduce the Risk of Patient Harm Resulting from Falls
