Kidney Transplant Surgery

Patients diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure have several options for treatment. They may be treated with hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or have a kidney transplant. Patients interested in transplantation as a treatment option may ask their nephrologist to refer them to The Transplant Center for evaluation.

At the initial evaluation, patients and their families will have the opportunity to ask questions about all phases of transplantation care. Following the evaluation, the transplant nephrologist will develop and individual plan of care suitable to every patient's condition.

The evaluation that is performed for every patient includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • A consultation with the transplant surgeon and transplant urologist
  • Routine laboratory testing
  • Chest X-ray and EKG
  • Cardiac evaluation for all diabetic patients and patients older than 40 years
  • Psycho-social evaluation performed by the transplant social worker

How long do patients wait for a transplant?

Patients who complete the evaluation process and choose to pursue transplantation as a treatment option can be transplanted quickly if they have a suitable living donor.

These donors may be relatives or close friends. The statistics show that transplants from living donors perform better than those from cadaveric donors. Those patients who do not have a potential living donor are placed on the national computer waiting list. When a suitable kidney becomes available, the transplant is performed at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

The transplant team also will follow the patients through the transplant hospitalization and provide intensive outpatient follow-up after the transplant. All through the process, patients and their family members are able to reach the transplant team 24 hours per day to answer any questions or concerns.

The transplant team includes the transplant surgeon, transplant nephrologists, transplant urologists, transplant cardiologists, as well as specially trained transplant nurses, coordinators, social workers and dietician.
