History:
When Rev. Jerry J. Griffin, BCC, our former System Director of Spiritual
Services was hired, Jim Nathan, CEO asked him what he envisioned for the Spiritual
Services Department. One of Jerry's visions was the development of a Parish Nurse
Program.
In October, 1997 the Parish Nurse Program began to take form. A steering committee
was developed to introduce the idea into our healthcare system and a Parish Nurse
Coordinator Consultant from Bon Secours (St. Joseph's Hospital)
was hired part-time with funds from our Auxiliary. One year later, LMHS hired their
own Parish Nurse Coordinator and now this position has elevated to Manger on a full-time
basis.
Current Program Development:
Nearly two dozen faith communities have partnered with the LMHS
Parish Nurse Program forming an ecumenical group from many denominations including:
Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Catholic, Baptist, and the United
Church of Christ.
Parish nursing continues to grow in importance as part of the continuum
of care between our healthcare system and the faith community as the faith/health
connection is made.
