LMHS To Open Gulf Coast Medical Center... LEE COUNTY'S NEWEST HOSPITAL

View from the NE

Lee County, Florida - A "topping out" ceremony in 2007 marked a special occasion for staff awaiting the opening of the new Gulf Coast Medical Center. Construction is nearing completion.

The advanced facility, which brings together Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center and Gulf Coast Hospital, is located at the corner of Daniels Parkway and Metro Parkway, in the center of the county.

Lee Memorial Health System administrators plan to open the new hospital in early 2009.

"This new facility will make it possible to deliver the latest, high-quality care in the most efficient and convenient way for our community," says Doug Luckett, Chief Administrative Officer for SWFRMC/GCH. "Our wide range of services will enable our residents to take care of virtually all their medical care needs in one location."

Designed by Perkins+Will architectural firm, a global leader in health care planning and design, the new building wraps around the current Gulf Coast Hospital. When complete, the approximately $172 million, 550,000+ square foot facility will be four times larger than Gulf Coast Hospital.

"Everything about this hospital is designed with patient comfort, convenience and safety in mind," says Doug.

The hospital will feature 349 private patient rooms, a 43-bed emergency department that is double the current capacity, 22 large operating rooms with more square footage than in current OR, and a structure built for future growth to 421 beds. Physician offices will also be located in and around the facility to offer patients ease in scheduling procedures and office visits.

The facility will feature four floors of advanced medical care, including:

  • Expanded Emergency Department: 10-bed observation unit, 5 trauma rooms, 28 exam and treatment rooms will accommodate twice the 46,000 cases currently treated in the ED each year

  • Spacious Surgical Suites: 22 operating rooms for general, vascular, orthopedic, spine and neurosurgery

  • Latest Diagnostic Imaging: PACS technology for increased quality and more efficient reading of diagnostic images, MRI and CT scans available.

  • Comprehensive Cardiovascular care: the latest in cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment, including cath lab, angioplasty and EP labs.

  • Advanced Neurology and Stroke Care: JCAHO certification as a Primary Stroke Center, providing highest level of care for stroke patients.

  • Outpatient Rehabilitation Services: physical, occupational and speech therapy, hand therapy, cardiac rehabilitation.

  • Wound Care: includes hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment.

  • Obstetrics and Gynecological Care.

  • Kidney transplantation.

The project's general contractor Skanska USA Building Inc. is the nation's fourth largest health care construction manager, responsible for building many of the most notable hospitals in the U.S., including the main clinical facility at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
